Internet Society Video

Our colleague Rob Cartolano of Columbia University was one of three featured speakers at an Internet Society discussion of “Digital Preservation: Business Models and Financial Incentives” on Monday evening, February 5, in New York City.  The other two speakers were Vint Cerf, vice president and Chief Internet Evangelist of Google, and venture capitalist Brad Burnham of Union Square Ventures.

Not surprisingly, Rob represented higher education’s work in digital preservation with distinction, and the entire session was intriguing, exploring themes ranging from the explosive growth of digital materials to physical safe-deposit boxes to filecoin.  Cerf even recommended several written works:  E. M. Forster’s “The Machine Stops” (1909) and Peter Godfrey-Smith’s Other Minds: The Octopus and the Evolution of Intelligent Life (2017, ISBN 0374227764).
